| According to legend, Seville was founded by Hercules and its origins are linked with the Tartessian civilisation. It was called Hispalis under the Romans and Isbiliya with the Moors.
Over the last decade, particularly since the Universal Expo of 1992, Seville has risen in status to become the third city in Spain, after Barcelona and Madrid, in terms of numbers of people attending conferences and conventions. This statistic is not surprising as the city is able to offer excellent (and often brand new) facilities for up-market conventions, and a large number of five, four and three star hotels, with plenty of capacity and all the necessary resources to host this type of event.
The capital of Andalusia, which has the most extensive historic centre in Europe, also has a large number of interesting museums, monuments of great architectural interest and many places of entertainment. Authentic flamenco shows can be found in abundance in this city which is where between 1765 and 1860, one of the first Flamenco schools was created.
